Fast forward a month, and Justin and I were still going strong. I still loved everything about him. But I was worried; we were both about to be going on two separate tours. I wouldn’t see him for a very long time. We were both all too aware of this fact. When we hung out, we tried to soak up every little bit of each other that we could, hoping that it would carry us through our months apart.
I said goodbye to Justin in September as he departed for his tour. I was sad, but I had to get over it. I had one coming up, too. We were going to be away from each other for months. We only had our old standbys; phone calls, texting and skype. We were going to try to make the best of it.
My birthday was in October. Of course I didn’t get to spend it with Justin. He did surprise me with something, however.
At about 8:00pm I got a text from Kenny. He asked if I was available for skype. I didn’t have a concert that night, so I told him yes. I didn’t understand, though… Justin was playing. Who was I going to talk to? Kenny? I laughed at the thought as I sat up my computer on my hotel bed.
Kenny appeared on my screen and said hello. I asked him what was going on.
“Justin wanted you to see something.”
“Why didn’t he tell me about it?”
“You’ll see. Happy Birthday by the way.”
“Thanks.”
“You might want to turn your volume down until I give you the thumbs up.”
“Ok…” I had noticed that he was walking somewhere very dark and the sound wasn’t very good. It was like something was going on in the background. Something very loud. Then it hit me. He was at
Justin’s concert. I quickly imagined Justin doing some horribly dangerous stunt and wondered if I could even make it through watching it without freaking out.
But as Kenny walked out to the stage, he didn’t stop. He kept going. He walked with his laptop all the way to the middle of the stage where Justin was. Justin waved at me and smiled and waved back awkwardly. Then Kenny grabbed a pedestal and set the laptop on it. A few technician guys walked over and began messing around with it. Then Kenny gave me the thumbs up.
I was so confused and I had no idea what was going on. I turned my sound on, and heard the crowd. They weren’t as loud as I expected. Then Justin began to talk.
“Hey, Em! I know you probably have no idea what’s going on. I got my technicians to hook up my computer so that we could see you on the big screen, and you could hear me well, and we can hear you.” ****. I’m on the big screen.
“Awesome.” I said. I had no idea what else to say.
“Normally I bring a girl on stage and sing to her. And you’re such a nice sport about it.” I smiled and laughed.
“But I thought that since today is your birthday, I’d bring you on stage, virtually, and sing to you.” My smile got even bigger.
“I know this is one of your favorite songs of mine.” A guy brought Justin a guitar and a stool. He sat down beside the computer and began to play and sing “One Less Lonely Girl”. My heart melted.
After the song was over, Justin shouted to his crowd.
“Everyone say ‘Happy Birthday Emma!’” I was surprised, because it sounded like a lot of people said it.
“Thanks everyone!” I shouted back.
“I’m gonna get back to my concert, Em. I’m sorry I can’t be with you on your birthday.”
“It’s ok.”
“See you soon!” He said and blew me a kiss. I said goodbye and blew him one, too. Then Kenny came over, got the laptop and walked backstage.
“See ya Em!” He waved and hung up our video call. I couldn’t keep from smiling the whole night.
